The ocean is probably one of the most interesting things in our world. There is just so much to learn about it and so much we don't even know. It's literally the biggest thing we can observe really, besides space which a lot of us don't observe or will never see. The ocean is so fascinating yet it is very scary to me. Knowing that we just keep finding new creatures and things all the time is so weird and mysterious. I think there is still so much that has been undiscovered. The thing in the ocean that fascinates me the most is whales. I'm truly very interested in them, it's weird, I feel like they are so mysterious. They are just so big its unreal, and how they just come to the surface and can jump through the air. How do they even do that being as big as they are. I watch youtube videos of whales all the time because I really think they are just such crazy things. I would love to see a whale in real life in its natural habitat but it would have to be in view of the shore because I would want to know that I was on land and it couldn't get that close to me. If I were to be in a boat and see a whale I would be the most scared person in the world. They could easily bump the boat and knock it over and then kill me when I fell out or just jump up and land on the boat and kill me. Even though I'm scared of them, I like them and think they are nice creatures except when I hear some attack stories from Sea World and other aquariums. Another thing that amazes me is when there are beached whales, I would love to see that to but wouldn't want to see them die. Along with its size, and creatures, the tsunamis, storms, waves and hurricanes in the ocean fascinate me too.

Hmm, the first boy I ever liked was a long time ago, like second grade I actually think it was a crush on the boy I ended up dating my whole junior and senior year in high school, but I didn't talk to him back then. In elementary and middle school I was so shy and never wanted to talk to boys but then everything changed in high school. Even though I really only had one serious boyfriend and like two other crushes, but I'm definitely not very shy anymore. Oh no! I had a crush in daycare when I was in preschool on this boy named Aaron. We were so young and I didn't want anyone to know I liked him, and one time our daycare teacher mentioned us having a crush on each other and I got really nervous and ran away. We played legos at the lego table together everyday and I one time we were picking up the legos and kissed under the legos table! Then he moved away and I never seen him again. Haha! I forgot all about that I don't know how I was so shy up through middle school but did that in preschool! I always remember having crushes on all the members of the Nsync and the Backstreet boys bands, I had all the posters in my room. I went to a small school so I only remember really actually liking about three specific boys, I just have lots of little crushes.

I have quite a few pet peeves. One of the biggest ones would have to be when my phone dies. It is so annoying, like why do they even need to be charged. Nothing is the same without your phone. I'm not one of those obsessed people that never put their phone down, but knowing people are unable to reach you is so annoying you feel like shut out from everything and simple things that you just want to ask people real quick through a text message you can't do. Also I always check my phone for the time and you can't do that either. Another thing is when I'm in class I cannot be sane without getting on the internet every couple minutes. I'm pretty sure I have ADD, so I just can't stay focused with one thing for a more then a few minutes. I'm a little obsessed with facebook and I am constantly checking it and reading everyones status. I get on twitter a lot during class too.

I have another pet peeve that is a little weird and different from the first one but I just cannot stand when people study for test or exams that I don't study for or am not studying at that time for. For example if me and someone on my floor both had a chemistry midterm next week and they already started studying and I'm doing something else it will bother be so badly. I know it's weird because I know what I need to do and what I'm going to and what they're doing wont affect me but it bothers me.

My most memorable trip would definitely have to be my spring break 2010. This was my senior year in high school and our softball team went to Cocoa Beach, Florida. Our school has never taken trips like that before but every four years we get a full week long spring break so that our band and choir can go precipitate in the competitions in Disney World. Our softball coaches had known us group of girls the longest because of all the camps we all did together and how we all played varsity for multiple years, so they decided it was the perfect time and group to take the trip. My team was the closest team ever we were all best friends so it was perfect. It was perfect my two best friends in the world, Sarah and Casidy, were on the team and we got our own room while everyone else had four people to a room. Also my baby sister was on the team too. We only played 3 of the 6 days that we were down there. We won all but one of our games while there and we played about nine. It was so nice to play in that weather because softball seasons are always cold in Ohio. The rest of the time we spent there we swam, layed out, played volleyball on the beach, went shopping, went out to eat, and practiced. It was the funnest time ever. Everyone's whole family came so every time we went to a restaurant or on the beach it was like a whole town. We also had a few practices on the beach, one was at 6  a.m. and we took a run down the beach while the sun was rising. It was amazing. Every moment of that week was perfect. I'll never forget that trip.

If could go back in time and meet anybody I would for sure one hundred percent pick John F. Kennedy, then I would marry him! JFK would be my perfect husband, he was so good looking. He was a democrat and I am too! I would love a smart, powerful, guy like him as my husband. I mean who wouldn't? Being the first lady would be one of the coolest things ever. I would study up on everything and try to be just as important. I guess I'm out of luck though so I'll have to marry someone who is alive. There are many eligible living candidates I would love to meet and marry. An athlete would be my dream husband but I would meet and marry Drake in a second. Drake is probably the love of my life. I don't know why I like him so much. Most people don't think he is that that hot but I'm just really attracted to him and I'm in absolute love with his voice and all his songs. He is also only 5 years older than me so it would work perfect. If I was to meet or choose my athletics husband it would Mike Wallace, the Pittsburgh Steelers wide reciever, hands down. I am theeee biggest Steelers fan ever and I'm obsessed with football. Mike Wallace is also only 5 years older than me and so super attractive. Plus he is an athlete and fast as hell so what's not to love about him I would also love to meet/marry Justin Beiber, Pauly D, Derek Jeter, Lil Wayne, Lebron James, Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward, Cam Newton, Jared Sullinger and many more. I mean that's a large selection so I hope one of them works out. Oh, and I want to meet Beyonce!

The best present I ever got was probably my seventh grade birthday party. It was a combined party for me and my younger sister Rachel. Her birthday is in December and mine is in January and since were only a year apart, well really only 10.5 months, we just had it together.  We had many of the same friends since we were close in age and all of us had all played sports together in our small town. We were at the age where we had only had a few middle school dances so far, and thought they were the coolest thing ever, so my mom rented us out our local American Legion Hall and rented a DJ and we planned a dance party. It was the coolest thing ever the theme was a luau. We decorated the whole place with light up and blow up palm trees and put lays on everyones chairs. It looked so good. My mom took me and Rachel shopping to get outfits for our party. At the time we thought Aeropostale was the greatest place in the world, so we chose to go there and got matching white skirts and polos. I got a lime green polo with a pink undershirt and Rachel got a hot pink polo with a lime green undershirt. They were both our favorite outfits for the longest time. After we passed out invitations to the party Rachel, my best friend Sarah, and I made up a dance to the song "1,2 Step" by Ciara to do for everyone at the party. At the time, my still best friend Sarah lived across the street from me so we all got together everyday after school and practiced the dance. Everyone showed up to our party, we played games, ate great food, and danced the whole night! We also performed our dance for everyone and they all loved it. It's kind of embarrassing thinking of it all now but it was one of the funnest days. I'll never forget that birthday party.

I'm nineteen years old and haven't really had an official job yet. Back home where I live in Genoa, a small town outside of Toledo, my uncle owns this really good restaurant calls Rayz Cafe. We live in a very small town, my graduating class was only about 128 students. In our town we luckily have a McDonald's, Taco Bell, Subway, and then Rayz Cafe, which is the other actual sit down style restaurant. It's like a local bar and of course my uncle let me and my best friend work there. We were too young to be waitresses so we were just table bussers. After awhile though we realized it wasn't busy enough for busser besides on the weekends when we never really wanted to work then softball season started and we couldn't work at all anymore. We didn't have actual schedules and didn't get actual checks. He just payed us in cash every week. This summer though, since I needed some extra money for college I began working again every thursday and friday in the kitchen doing dishes and preparing foods. I didn't like it at all but my grandma works there in the kitchen so she made it okay because I love her and she is so cute but other than that it was boring. I also umpire softball games in the summer so I guess that's also a job. I actually like doing that though cause it's basically $30 for an hour and a half and I like softball, enjoy being outside, and most of the time got to ump games with my sister, who I also love a lot. Hopefully I will get a real job this summer though because I definitely need money to pay for my house next year!

I can't just pick one family memeber to talk about so I'm going to talk about all of them because I miss them so much. I'm from Toledo so it takes about three hours to get home so I only go home maybe one weekend out of the quarter so I don't get to see my family that often. I have twin brothers, John and Jake, who are sophomores in high school and a sister, Rachel, who is a senior in high school. It sucks not being able to see them and it's weird knowing that they're all still together without me. We all sort of fight a lot but I love and miss them. We have fun. I also miss my mom and I know she misses me a lot also. I like being independent and not living there anymore though, I just wish she could still do my laundry and make me good food sometimes. I would also like to just sit at home and relax with her though because I feel like there is absolutely not time to relax here. My grandma also lives in my house with us and she is the best ever. She is so precious and funny. Me and my family just always went out to dinner together all the time and to all of the sporting events for me and my brothers and sister. It's so weird not living with them. Last but definitely not least is my adorable pup brutus. He is the love of my life! He's a black lab and weights about 150 pounds. I always take that precious boy on walks in the summer. Aww, can't wait to see him agian, he's getting old. I hope he still wants to have fun when I get home.

So I have been studying my life away for my chemistry midterm and I haven't went to bed yet so I hope this still counts for my Sunday blog since we're suppose to do it before we go to bed which hasn't happened yet so I hope it still counts, plus I'm pretty sure these aren't checked until nine-ish I think? So yes I've been trying to do all of my blogs because I really need points because of haven't done so well on our drafts or anything. I did schedule a visit at the writing center on thursday but it's at eight thirty in the morning so I am really dreading it, especially because my first class isn't until one thirty that day, but that was the only time available to go and I could use the help and the extra credit points. I wish it was the weekend again because I'm really tired from studying all night and the weekends are always fun. College is way to stressful, I wasn't prepared for all this. I went to a tiny high school and we barely had any classes to choose from. I think one of the reason it's so stressful is all the distractions, I came here only knowing of a handful of people who were also going here and I did a random room mate, and now me and my room mate are best friends and her best friend from high school also goes here and lives in the dorm right next to us and we're all best friends and always together and it's very distracting, but I don't mind as long as I end up getting everything done, even if it means staying up all night, because I love my friends and we have sooo much fun!

Okay so I for sure did blog number 43 last night but it's not showing up. I got an e-mail saying I posted it and the number 43 came up when I went to type in number 44, so I don't know what happened. I love the weather right now though! It is perfect I even woke up at 9:30 when I didn't have class till 1:30 just to go running in this perfect weather. I hope it doesn't snow anymore but I know it will. Well, I'm happy it's thursday because its basically the start to the weekend. Also Jersey Shore it on tonight and after Jersey Shore me and my friends are going downtown tonight. I can finally go this week because we don't have webwork in calculus this week since we had a midterm. It's not even going to be cold when we stand in line either, so I'm real excited. The things I am not happy about though is that our stupid calc midterm was so hard and I didn't do very well on it and I have a stupid chemistry midterm on monday so I have to study a ton this weekend. I hate midterms but not as much as I hate finals. I'm kind off nervous for scheduling too because I have one of the last dates for some reason. Next quarter is still going to be just as hard as this one because I have to take the next level of chemistry as well as the next level of calculus. I want to schedule earlier classes next quarter though because this quarter by the time I have my last class of the day I can't pay attention and just want to be done. Plus when it's warmer out and light outside it will be much easier to wake up for morning classes.

Hello classmates. We got another in men's basketball tonight and I went to the wonderful game that is why I am blogging so late tonight, or shall I say early in the morning. Today's blog topic is "What makes your argument relevant?" There are a few things that make my argument of my common place paper relevant. My argument is that there is a rise in the number of stay at home dads. This is relevant to us because most of us will get married one day or have a partner and we are all either males or females. This relevancy applies to females in such a way that they will no longer take on the traditional housewife role and that society is beginning to allow and accept them as satisfactory people in the current work force. Also that they would be the family providers. The relevancy that this argument applies to males is obvious. They could have a new role in society instead of working all day and being the source of family income, they would be stepping down their duties to their wives, while they stayed home to cook, clean, and watch the children. This is why this topic is relevant to mostly everyone so is therefore a decent argument for my common place article. I apologize to everyone who has read a lot of my blogs and thinks they all pretty much sound the same because I'll admit that they do, but I find the same things to apply to all of our topics.

Hi Class! I hope everyone is having or had a wonderful valentines day today! Now i get to tell you why my argument is compelling, which won't really make your valentine days any better, sorry. One reason it is compelling is because it is an interesting topic. The idea of stay at home dads is interesting because it is all the opposite of what we are used to, and have been used to, forever in our culture and society. I think using lots of evidence, facts, and statistics should make my argument for a rise in stay at home dads a convincing topic. I also plan on writing it well. If I succeed in doing these things it should make ethos a compelling tool that the readers use while reading my common place paper. Also I hope the facts and statistics, along with real life scenarios and people's own personal experiences make people come to use logos while reading my article. However, I don not really think there will be much use of pathos in this article though because I am not sure I believe anything relating to this argument really appeals to peoples emotions. This topic might, on the other hand, appeal to men's emotions in a way that they might feel like they are less confident and feel powerless if the women made the money for the family, and they were just there to take care of the children and clean. This is why my argument for my common place paper is compelling.

What makes my topic of stay at home dads for my common place paper timely,  or consistent to today's trends is that now is when this trend is beginning. This idea has always been the opposite, other way around with a tradition of stay at home moms, but since the recent increase in the number of women in the work force and the increase of women earning higher college degrees, and the slight decrease in women discrimination the tradition has changed. This idea was never very common, or even thought off, before recently. Some men are stepping it down and allowing their wives to bring home the family income nowadays while they tend to the children. I fell like I have been saying a lot of the same things in my last five or however many blogs but it's like the answers to all of the topics we have been having to write about.     I don't have much else to say in this blog. I mean hopefully all the readers of this my common place paper agree that this paper is timely, and also relevant and compelling. This was the topic that my group thought was the best option for my paper from the list we wrote of things involving our analytical research paper. Well I really need to go to the writing center this week and not miss any more blogs for the rest of the year because I really need an A in this class because I have a lot of tough classes that will be a lot harder to receive A's in.

A hypothetical scenario involving my common place paper, that has the topic of a rise in the number of stay at home dads, is if women would eventually take over as the family provider and the men all became the child care takers. It would be a return of the old, traditional days by the exact opposite. All the fathers in the families would cook, clean the house, and tend to all the needs of the children. They would take the children to school, musical practices, athletic practices, doctors appointments, and birthday parties. The women would go to work all day and bring home the family income, the women would therefore hypothetically hold the power in the family and wear the pants in the relationships. And then men would even begin to take the women's last name in marriage, but probably not I just went to far. This situation would most likely not happen but you never know. First women need to establish gender equality before they could ever take over in this society. This is the only scenario I could come up with at the time. I hope I will be able to write enough in my common place paper to make it worthwhile because I think the topic is pretty relevant, compelling, and timely enough to write a decent paper. I don't really have much else to say about this today though, it sort of sucks trying to find enough to say for certain topics, especially on the weekends when you are not in school mode and could be doing other things at the time.

Well my common place paper idea as of now is still stay-at-home dads. I picked this because in my research for our analytical research project talking about stereotyping of women, I learned a lot about women gaining power and powerful positions in our society and in the articles it said it created a new way of our culture, and described the effects on men due to women and spouse success. With the women's rise in success came two income families and even stay at home dads. I've heard of a few families this way and it is becoming a new trend in television shows but I'm not personally close with a family that has a stay at home dad, but basically all of the families I know have two income families so I think that is the latest trend as of now until there is full gender equality and no more stereotyping and discrimination of women in the work force. Then when less discrimination is place on females and they can gain higher ranks such as CEO's, presidents of companies, doctors, and layer. Because it did say in my research that all of these fields were going to need the female mind sooner than later. When this happens I feel that by this time men will feel a little bit more comfortable staying home and women will make stable salaries so that their husbands won't have to work. For now though, I've only read about and watched shows and movies that show men as stay at home dads.

Thursday, February 10, 2011

So I'm really happy that today we can blog about whatever we want. I'm also really happy that it is Thursday. That means tomorrow is the weekend and that jersey shore it on tonight. I love Jersey Shore, it's the only show I watch because I don't like t.v. that much. Pauly D is my favorite because he always makes me laugh and he is just a good guy. He protects the other girls in the house and is never really mean to anybody. He is also adorable, I love his smile. I like everybody on the show though besides Sam and Ronnie, they're really annoying when they fight about every single thing. I'm really excited about the weekend because I went home last weekend for a wedding so I missed out of doing things her, but I did have a ton of fun at home and at the wedding I just missed the things I usually do here.  I'm really really sad that the steelers lost in the super bowl though. I am a die hard steelers fan and thought they would win for sure but I have much respect for Green Bay. They're a classy team and it was a good game. I'm also sad that I have webwork due tomorrow night for calculus. It is hard and takes so much time to do, I went to the workshop this morning and they showed how to do a few of the harder problems but I still have the rest to do and I don't know how. Hopefully I figure it out by tomorrow. Oh, and I really want to go to the Michigan State basketball game after my calculus midterm tuesday!

My idea for my commonplace paper topic is the idea of stay-at-home dads. In society there is becoming a new trend rather than the traditional stay-at-home moms. The cause for this trend comes from the significant increase of women in the workforce. More women are graduating with higher degrees in higher education. Females are currently earning 59 percent of masters degrees according to the National Center for Education Statistics. This results in them earning higher positions and therefore better wages. This is creating two-income families and a lot of stay-at-home dads. The dads tend to the needs of the children and the housework since the women are the ones that are able to provide a stable income. This describes a whole new look on society from what gender roles have always been. It also makes one realize the subtle rise to gender equality. The women will now provide for the husband or they will be both be able to provide for themselves and their family. I will need to find some more things to talk about in my paper. I was thinking about talking about the effects that woman's success had on men but i feel like I would get too off topic. Well that's all i have for now hopefully I think of more cause I think it would be kind of cool to have one of my essays on commonplace for 6,000 other students to access, but all the topics that were presented in class were interesting, timely, compelling, and relevant so it will be tough.

The article I read today from common place was called "Classes, Finals, Friends, and Cancer: The Life of Future College Students" by Shelby Veppert. It was in the society section under relevant articles. This article is about how cancer is a very serious thing affecting so many people in the world and not just the older people, but many college aged students. Cancer is actually the fourth leading cause of death for college aged students The first three causes of death for college students are unintentional injuries, homicide, and suicide. Five thousand and seven hundred of the 57,000 cancer cases in Ohio are college aged students. This article is shocking and makes you really realize that this can happen to one of us or a loved family member or friends and everyone takes it for granted thinking "It could never happen to me." Two big things I noticed a lot of people do here on our campus that causes cancer is cigarette smoking and tanning in tanning bed. I can't say that I am innocent but we need to realize the bigger picture of how bad we are harming ourselves. No matter how much I read it and hear about it I still continue to tan as much as possible sometimes going up to six days a week if my schedule allows it. I just don't like being pale but in the grand scheme of things I would much rather be a little white than to have the life-threatning disease of skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most pronounced cancers for young people. I hope myself and others will realize this before it's too late.

Well I just finished up draft one about an hour ago and I think it was a pretty good draft for the most part. It included all my main focus points, all my sources cited correctly, and the thesis of my paper. I know it needs a lot more work which I'm glad that this was just a draft because I have a lot more to do and could make this paper really good with a few more key points and a couple more good sources. When I go to write my final draft I feel like this will be the backbone of the paper and it will take a lot less time knowing I have this. I forgot to do a conclusion paragraph because I was distracted greatly by the super bowl. I need to add a little more information into all my paragraphs, create good, flowing topic and summary sentences, and add a conclusion paragraph, or a good ending paragraph that flows well with the rest of the paper and ties it all together. I am going to go to the writing center to help me out with these few last things. I still want and need to find a relevant, scholarly, article on Hilary Clinton and her democratic candidate presidential run. This well help me further my argument on my specific real world connection. I think my paper has a strong topic and argument and when it all comes together it will make a really good point.

This paper is really annoying me right now. I do not know how to put it all together and did not get a chance to go to the writing center this week because I had midterms to study for and then I couldn't figure out how to make an appointment in time cause I left early this morning to come home for a wedding. I also think it would be very helpful and beneficial if I had another scholarly article to work with. I need a scholarly article about Hilary Clinton and the struggles she faced during campaigning because of her gender. I could also use one about Sarah Palin or senatorial women or other women in politics but I would find one on Hilary Clinton most beneficial because she was running for the most prestigious position among the others, she is most well-known, and I like her because I am a democrat. Since I am at home though, as far as I know, I am unable to access a scholarly journal database. I think I have a good topic with a strong argument so hopefully I'll be able to pull this paper together pretty well, well I quite confident I will be able to once I visit the writing center a few times and find my couple extra sources. For now however, I'm going to try to pull this draft together at least in a way that I can understand it well so it will be beneficial to me when I am writing the final draft. So I'm off to work on my draft on a friday night at nine o'clock. I hope I am successful!

My paper is about the gender stereotyping in our society. My primary source is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I will start off by describing her in terms of appearance and her normal life. I will then precede to tell who Buffy actually is and her powers, skills, beliefs, and how people think of her. My next main point will be the problems women face because of gender stereotyping and the low expectations people have for them. I will use scholarly articles and the studies and experiments presented in them to prove the discrimination and problems they face in the workplace, in politics, and in everyday life. I will then explain specific examples of this happening such as Hilary Clinton running for president of the United States and the obstacles she had to face because of her sex that male candidates don't even have to consider. I will also reference the "Equality Now" speech in which the writer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Whedon, describes his inspiration for Buffy and how his point was to make the power in a females hand because the fact that people think that unordinary is a reason to do it. It proves we don't think of women equal to men yet if we find it weird for a women to have so much power. The paper will relate women power and stereotypically views from both the Buffy the Vampire episodes and the real world. Gender equality needs to be established in this world. Girl Power!

In practically every country in the world, men reign superior in politics and women reign as the minorities. There is much bias against women in elections. Across the globe women hold only 16 percent of the parliamentary seats. Research shows that voters believe women do not carry the characteristics need to perform leadership roles and the jobs in politics. "Gender is one of the most salient social categories and often the first categories on the basis of which people are judged" (Lammers 1). When voting, a voter would never question casting their vote for a particular candidate because that candidate was a male but women, on the other hand, will get questioned majority of the time because of the particular reason that they are a female. Voters make much use of stereotyping because it serves as the easiest way to come up with a quick image of the political candidates. The fact that men have a competitive, straight forward attitude people are quick to think they would be best for the job rather than a stereotypical female who is communal and pro-social. Some voters cast their ballot based on which candidate they think would handle the problem they themselves think to be the biggest issue at the time. For example, if a voter thought terrorism was the biggest issue they would pick a male candidate over a female candidate to handle such a problem because men are stereotypically assertive and could deal with the dirty problems like this while a female would be more prone to deal with a health care issue. In my opinion more than likely voters will find a lot of issues more important than a health care problem which in a women's reach, therefore be more prone to vote for a male candidate.
